Brief history of scouting in Črnuče

Scouting in Črnuče began in year 1968 when a patrol leader Dušan Benko from scout group Bičkova skala together with his friend Tanja established the first scout patrol in Črnuče. Soon older leaders left the organization and Drago Kukanja took over the leadership. There was not enough funding and little understanding from the Local Community so patrol meetings were temporarily held in the old community building.

They were still inexperienced, without support and premises when they gained, with the help of a policeman, a small cellar room under the former police station. Membership was fluctuating from 40 to 60 members. They organized trips and camps in a nearby valley and participated in many competitions with great success. In the year 1975 organization died away.

Today's Scout group Heroj Vitez was established on the 25th of February 1979. About ten enthusiasts gathered with the common desire to spend time in nature and together they established a new scout group in the premises of the archery association in Spodnje Črnuče. Formal registration of the organisation followed not long after. Soon they had to move out of archery premises so, for a time, members were meeting at of one of the member's home, later in a room of Inn Cunder (present Havana). After some time they gained a cellar room in the basement of local community Črnuče - Gmajna but later they were forced out to make room for Black Jack bar. On the 4th of February 1988 they gained premises in a library where they stayed till the end of the year 1999. In January 2000 the organisation temporarily moved to premises of former store Šolar.

The first equipment was tents and a compass. First group leader was Drago Kukanja, chairman of honour Matija Butala. Scout leaders were Niko Grbec and Lenka Avšič, especially active members were Branimir Mikulaš, Dušan Puh, Zakotnik Zvone, Zadravec Darko, Dornik and others. A group founding council was held in December 1979 and was Followed by many succesful activities and competitions. We founded a Črne ovce in Trzin. Our group organized many republic competitions and a training for patrol leaders. We cooperated a lot with Jezerske Ščuke group from Cerknica.

The successful year 1989 was followed by a decline of activities, membership decreased, troop from Trzin fell apart, and reputation vanished. Crisis was big, like in the society of that time.

Year 1993 brought a new statute, the group was. There were no new patrols, only a part of the members remained and they founded a rower crew. In the beginning of the year 93/94 there were no active patrols. That was the worst year ever. But even then the group managed to regain former strength. The membership grew and the group started to collaborate with other groups (Rod rdeči Zalog, ...) and with The Scouts Organisation of Ljubljana.
